Overview

During the early 1950s, Standard Brands Inc., New York City, issued nine different series of package design (PD) collector cards that were part of their Royal Desserts pudding boxes. “Royal Stars of the Sky” was the fourth in the series. There are a total of 24 airplane cards in this series. The back of the cards are blank. Each card features a black-and-white Official in-flight airplane photograph superimposed on a blue-green background. The series title and card number appears at the top of each card in bold black ink. The card title and aircraft designation are centered directly beneath the aircraft photo. Just below the card title line, the following caption appears on all 24 cards.

“Be a plane spotter! Get the authentic Manual of Military Aircraft. Contains complete information and silhouettes of 24 Royal Stars of the Sky, plus space to mount your collection. Mail 10¢ and 3 package fronts from any Royal Desserts with your name and address to Royal, Box 124, Brooklyn 1, N.Y.”

The set’s American Card Catalog reference designation of F219-4.

Three Ways to Collect Cards

There are three distinct ways to collect the “Royal Stars of the Sky” airplane cards: (1) Full Box; (2) Full Trimmed Card which includes both the top and bottom captions; and (3) Trimmed Card that fits in the allotted areas of the album. The three options are shown below.

Album

The “Royal Stars of the Sky” album is an elusive little gem that is rarely seen. In fact, Royal Desserts did not refer to the album as an album, but as a Manual of Military Aircraft … For Plane Spotters. The Manual measures approximately 5 × 7 inches and contains 28 pages. All 28 of the pages are shown below. Once again, we have included high resolution (600-dpi) images of the album pages.
