Overview
During 1957-1958 timeframe, the Amalgamated Tobacco Corporation (Australia), Pty. Ltd., Flemington, Queensland, Australia, issued their 25-card set of “Into Space” cigarette insert cards. Printed for issue in Mauritius, this Overseas Issue set was issued with Mills Filtertips Cigarettes. The set was assigned the Australian & New Zealand Index Number of A46-31.
The fronts of the “Into Space” cards feature borderless rectangular color artwork. The artwork covers a wide range of historical aeronautical and aerospace events, plus artistic conceptual renderings of future envisioned spaceflight vehicles, equipment, and missions. The cards even provide a glimpse into the future with the building of a Space Station. The artwork for the cards are a mix of landscape and portrait formats. The image area of the cards are without captions except for three cards which label various parts of rockets, and space suits. The image area is surrounded by a off-white border.
The backs of the cards are represented on a off-white card stock printed with a light blue ink. The card backs feature the following vertical stack of six text elements that are centered horizontally on the card:
